If your old Vimeo videos stopped playing and a pop-up asks you to join Vimeo Starter, your account is over its storage allowance and Vimeo has restricted your newest uploads first. Legacy Basic accounts get 5 GB in total and every video counts. The new Free plan only counts private, unlisted and embeddable videos against 3 GB, so public videos with embedding turned off don't use any of it. A restricted video can't be played, edited or downloaded, and deleting one can't be undone.

CineD ran a first-person piece on 2 November by a filmmaker who joined Vimeo in July 2008, never bought a plan, and now sees six videos online out of an archive of shorts, music videos and wedding films. We read through Vimeo's help centre, which rewrote its lapse and storage pages on 27 October 2026, to work out which rule hits which account and what you can do about it. We haven't tried any of this on an account of our own. Everything below comes from Vimeo's documentation and pricing page.

## In short

- Vimeo now runs two storage systems. On the new Free, Creator, Core and Professional plans, public videos with embedding off are unlimited, and everything else counts as "managed storage".
- Legacy Basic accounts keep a 5 GB cap, and Vimeo counts every video against it whatever its privacy setting.
- Over the limit, Vimeo restricts videos from the newest upload backwards. They stay in the account, but links and embeds stop playing and you can't download them.
- Starter costs $12 a month billed yearly or $20 month to month on Vimeo's US pricing page. Downloading from your library needs a paid plan, one video at a time.
- Vimeo says the new free tier isn't available in Italy and Austria yet, and gives no reason.

## Which storage rule applies to your account?

Open your account settings and look at "Membership" in the top left corner. Find that plan name in the table and you know which limit you're up against.

Table: Vimeo storage limits by plan, from Vimeo's help centre (November 2026)

| Plan | Limit | What counts | Public, embedding off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (old free plan) | 5 GB total | Every video | Counts |
| Free (new, October 2026) | 3 GB managed | Private, unlisted, password, embed-only and embeddable videos | Unlimited |
| Creator | 50 GB managed | Same as Free | Unlimited |
| Core | 500 GB managed | Same as Free | Unlimited |
| Professional | 7 TB managed | Same as Free | Unlimited |
| Starter / Standard / Advanced | 2 TB / 4 TB / 7 TB total | Every video | Counts |

Vimeo adds two exceptions. It says Free accounts created before 17 June 2024 "may have different video storage limitations", and Starter accounts opened before that date that kept paying are capped at 60 videos instead of 2 TB. Creator, Core and Professional are "being rolled out gradually", so you may not see them yet, and their prices aren't on the public pricing page as we write this.

The CineD author's account shows the old Basic behaviour: a 5 GB pop-up and a "Plus membership expired" message, even though he says he never paid. On Basic, making a film public changes nothing, because public videos count too.

## What happens to a restricted video?

Vimeo uses "restricted" on the lapse pages and "locked" on the managed storage page. The rules read the same.

Table: A restricted video, according to Vimeo's lapse FAQs

| You try to | Result |
|---|---|
| Play it, or open its link or embed | Doesn't play for anyone |
| Edit it | Blocked |
| Download it | Blocked |
| Delete it | Allowed, permanent, skips Recently deleted |
| Upload something new | Blocked on Basic; on Free only public, non-embeddable uploads go through |
| Get it back | Happens on its own once the library fits the allowance |

Vimeo restricts videos "in reverse upload order", so your oldest films stay up longest. If your best work is also your most recent, it goes first.

Your original camera files are probably gone already. Free and Basic accounts never keep source files, and when a paid plan lapses Vimeo deletes stored source files after 60 days. Anything you rescue will be Vimeo's converted version: fine for a portfolio, too compressed for a regrade.

## How do you get your videos back?

Table: Ways out, with what each one costs you

| Route | Works on | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set videos to Public with embedding off | New Free and the managed storage plans | Free | Anyone can watch them; no use on Basic |
| Delete newer videos you don't need | Every plan | Free | Permanent, and you can't download a restricted video first |
| Pay for a month, download, then decide | Every plan | Starter: $20 for one month (US) | One video at a time, converted files only |
| Ask support to move a Basic account to the new Free plan | Basic | Free | Vimeo doesn't document this path |

On the new Free plan, the public route costs nothing and you keep your links. Check your contracts first, though: wedding films and client cuts often sit on private or password links because the couple or the brand asked for it, and you can't make those public on your own.

On Basic you're left with delete or pay. If the films matter to you, one month of Starter is the cheaper loss. Download everything you care about while the plan runs, and expect it to take a while, since Vimeo's help page says there's "no option to download multiple videos in bulk". When the month ends, the account lapses again and the same videos lock again.

Vimeo shows European prices only inside your account. The CineD author, writing from Europe, quotes about €8 a month as the cheapest way back in. We couldn't find euro or sterling prices on a public Vimeo page, so check the checkout screen.

## Can a free account download its own videos?

Vimeo contradicts itself here. The Free and Basic plan pages both list "download of converted video files". The help page on downloading from your library opens with "This feature requires a paid plan on Vimeo". Neither page applies to restricted videos, which nobody can download on any plan. If you're planning a rescue, assume you'll need to pay and be pleased if you don't.

## Why isn't the new free plan in Italy and Austria?

Vimeo's announcement of 7 October 2026 says only that "the new free tier is not currently available in Italy and Austria". It gives no reason and no date. Vimeo had already cut features from Vimeo.com in the EU and UK: search is limited to your own library, and Staff Picks, channels, groups, categories, My Feed and For Hire are gone. Vimeo blames "a variety of regulations targeting online platforms" without naming them.

If you live in Italy or Austria, don't assume the unlimited public storage applies to you. Your Membership line and the storage tracker in the bottom left corner of your library tell you which rule you're on.

## Should you stay on Vimeo?

Table: Which setup fits which use

| You use Vimeo for | Plan | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A public portfolio of shorts and music videos | New Free | Unlimited if embedding is off, no ads |
| A showreel embedded on your own website | Creator if you get it, otherwise Starter | Embeddable videos count as managed storage |
| Client deliveries on private or password links | Paid plan | Free plans lose password and unlisted privacy |
| Keeping an archive of old work | None | A host isn't a backup; keep your masters on your own drives |

Table: The 2026 rules, good and bad

| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Unlimited public, non-embeddable videos on every new plan, including Free | Legacy Basic stays at 5 GB with every video counting |
| Free managed storage went from 1 GB to 3 GB | Restricted videos can't be downloaded, even to save a copy before deleting |
| No ads, and Vimeo says it won't let AI models train on your videos | No bulk download from the library on any plan |
| Restricted videos aren't deleted and come back with their old links | The new free tier isn't offered in Italy or Austria |

The CineD author ends on the 3-2-1 backup rule: three copies, two kinds of media, one off site. For a filmmaker that means your exports and project files live on drives you own, and Vimeo is somewhere you show work. If you're rebuilding an archive from camera originals, our [Nikon ZR R3D NE workflow guide](https://www.4filmmakers.co/news/nikon-zr-r3d-ne-workflow/) covers which editors open the files and where Resolve's Media Management trim breaks, and the [DaVinci Resolve 21.1.2 article](https://www.4filmmakers.co/news/davinci-resolve-21-1-2/) lists what changed in the current version before you re-export old projects.

## Questions people ask

**Q: Why are my old Vimeo videos not playing?**
Your account is probably over its storage allowance. Vimeo restricts videos in reverse upload order until the library fits, and a restricted video doesn't play anywhere, including shared links and embeds. Check the storage tracker in the bottom left corner of your library.

**Q: Does Vimeo delete videos when you go over the limit?**
No. Vimeo says restricted videos stay in your account and come back once your library fits the allowance, either because you upgraded or because you deleted other videos. Deleting a restricted video yourself is permanent.

**Q: Is Vimeo storage unlimited on the free plan?**
Only for public videos with embedding turned off, on the new Free plan. Private, unlisted, password-protected and embeddable videos share a 3 GB allowance. Legacy Basic accounts have 5 GB for everything, and the new free tier isn't available in Italy and Austria.

**Q: Can I download all my Vimeo videos at once?**
No. Vimeo's help centre says there's no bulk download from the library, so you download each video from its settings page. That page says downloading needs a paid plan, and Vimeo stores your original source files only on paid plans with the option turned on.
