The Sony FX5 was announced on 22 July 2026 and was supposed to ship in mid-August. It still hasn’t reached most buyers. Sony’s European stores now list **16 November 2026**, and SonyAlphaRumors says North American dealers will start shipping on **8 and 9 November**. Sony has only ever blamed “production-related circumstances”, while early owners have reported rear screens that come loose.

If you have a pre-order in, here’s what’s confirmed, what’s only reported, and the two minutes of checks worth doing when the box finally lands.

## In short

- Announced 22 July 2026 for a mid-August release. Three months later, most pre-orders are still waiting.
- Europe: Sony’s own stores list 16 November. North America: 8–9 November, according to SonyAlphaRumors, not Sony.
- Sony’s only explanation is “production-related circumstances”. It has not commented on the screen reports.
- Owners on Reddit describe the rear LCD shifting out of place. Some say Sony replaced their bodies.
- Prices haven’t moved: $4,899.99 body only, $5,499.99 with the XLR handle (€5,400 and €6,000).

## When will the FX5 actually ship?

It depends on where you ordered it, and on who you believe.

**Europe** has the firmest date, because it comes from Sony itself: the product pages on Sony’s UK, French and German stores switched to 16 November on 2 October, as Newsshooter spotted. Sony didn’t announce the change. The date just appeared.

**North America** is less clear. Sony Electronics hasn’t published a new date, and B&H takes orders without showing one. On 26 October SonyAlphaRumors wrote that it had “100% reliable” confirmation that dealers will ship on 8 and 9 November. That comes from the site’s own sources, not from Sony, so treat it as a rumor until the boxes move.

**Japan** still reads “late October or later”, a notice Sony hasn’t touched since 18 September.

One more thing to keep in mind: orders ship in the order they were placed. If you ordered in October, you could easily be looking at December.

## How did a mid-August camera end up in November?

Step by step, with each date taken from Sony notices or store listings as reported by Newsshooter:

Table: Sony FX5 release dates, July to October 2026

| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 22 July | FX5 announced. Japan release set for 21 August, US for mid-August |
| 28 July | Sony Japan warns of delays: orders far above its forecast |
| 18 August | Sony Japan postpones the release for “production-related circumstances”, no new date |
| Late August | Sony’s European stores list 16 October |
| 18 September | Sony Japan updates its notice: “late October or later” |
| 2 October | European stores move to 16 November |
| 26 October | SonyAlphaRumors reports North American shipping on 8–9 November |

The Japanese notice covers the whole system, not just the body: the DVF-EL1 viewfinder, the XLR-H2 handle and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode cable are delayed too.

## What’s wrong with the FX5 screen?

Sony hasn’t said. What we have are owner reports, and they point the same way.

A small number of FX5s did reach customers in late August. On 2 October PetaPixel wrote about a buyer in Mexico City who got three bodies and found that the rear LCD assembly could shift out of position, leaving a gap that shows the inside of the camera. The same owner said rental units had the same problem. A second owner reported that Sony agreed to replace their camera, with the swap booked for 19 October. More recently, a post on the r/SONYFX5 subreddit described Sony replacing two bodies with units from a newer batch, which SonyAlphaRumors picked up on 25 October.

None of that proves the screen is the reason for the delay. But the timing fits, and retailer messages fit too: a German dealer told customers Sony was making a final quality adjustment that wouldn’t affect image performance, and Adorama spoke of extra time for “quality verification”.

*The 3.5-inch fully articulating screen, the part owners say can come loose. Image: Sony.*

It’s also a new part. The FX5 screen is bigger than the FX3’s (3.5 inches against 3.0) and moves in more directions: about 98° up, 40° down and 180° to the side, on what Sony calls a 4-axis multi-angle hinge. More joints, more ways for an assembly to sit wrong.

## What to check when yours arrives

Nothing here needs tools, and it’s better done on day one than halfway through a job:

- **Run the screen through every position.** Flip it out, up, down and fully round, then close it. It should sit flush against the body every time, with no gap along the edges.
- **Look at it from the side.** A screen that has started to lift is easier to see in profile than from the back.
- **Check the touch layer and the hinge cable.** Touch all four corners and watch for flicker as you move the screen.
- **Keep the box and the receipt** until you’re happy, and note your dealer’s return window. It’s usually far quicker than a warranty repair.

If something looks off, contact the dealer first. Owners who reported the problem say Sony replaced the camera rather than repairing it, but that’s their experience, not a published policy.

## What are you waiting for, exactly?

A reminder of why people are putting up with this. The FX5 sits between the FX3 and the FX6 in Sony’s [Cinema Line](https://www.4filmmakers.co/topics/cameras/) and brings two things no FX camera had before: Open Gate and internal RAW.

Table: Sony FX5, manufacturer data from the 22 July 2026 announcement

| | |
|---|---|
| Sensor | Full-frame fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS, BIONZ XR2 with AI unit* |
| Dynamic range | 15+ stops in S-Log3, Dual Gain Shooting |
| Base ISO | 800, 4000 and 12800 |
| Video | 5K up to 60p, 4K up to 120p, FHD up to 240p |
| Open Gate | 3:2 full sensor readout, X-OCN only at launch |
| RAW | Internal X-OCN (16-bit linear): LT, plus new C1 and C2 |
| Stabilisation | 5-axis in-body, roll correction about twice the FX3’s |
| Screen | 3.5″, about 2.76M dots, 16:9, fully articulating touch LCD |
| Audio | 4 channels, up to 96 kHz 32-bit float with the XLR-H2 handle |
| Battery | NP-SA100, 2670 mAh, about 1.3x the NP-FZ100 |
| Other | Cooling fan in a sealed air chamber, dust and moisture resistant, wired LAN, 2 × USB-C with PD and timecode in |
| Price | $4,899.99 / €5,400 body. $5,499.99 / €6,000 with XLR-H2 |

*Sony’s press release doesn’t give a megapixel figure. Several outlets report 16.6MP, which we couldn’t confirm on Sony’s own pages.

Two catches worth knowing before you pick a workflow. Open Gate only works in X-OCN for now, and 240 fps is limited to compressed codecs. Sony’s version 2.0 firmware adds Open Gate in XAVC S-I, 240 fps in X-OCN, a vertical interface and frame grabs, but it’s scheduled for **August 2027 or later**. Buy it for what it does today.

If the open gate part is what sold you, the [Sigma FP2](https://www.4filmmakers.co/news/sigma-fp2/) offers 6K open gate in a much smaller body from 11 November, though without IBIS or internal RAW.

## Wait, cancel, or buy an FX3?

Our take: if you already have a pre-order, keep it. Most big dealers, B&H included, don’t charge until the camera ships, so waiting costs you nothing but time, and cancelling sends you to the back of a long queue.

If you have a paid job before mid-November that you planned around the FX5, don’t gamble on these dates. Rent one, or rent an FX3 for that shoot. Three delays in three months is a pattern.

And if what you really need is a small full-frame cinema body that works now, the FX3 is still on sale, has years of accessories and firmware behind it, and launched at about $3,900 in 2021. You give up Open Gate, internal RAW, the bigger screen and the third base ISO. For a lot of corporate and event work, that’s a fair trade. For anyone cropping vertical and horizontal deliveries from one take, it isn’t.

## Questions people ask

**Q: Has the Sony FX5 been released?**
It was announced on 22 July 2026 and a few units reached buyers in August, but general shipping hasn’t started. Sony’s European stores list 16 November 2026. North American shipping is reported for 8–9 November.

**Q: Why is the Sony FX5 delayed?**
Sony says “production-related circumstances” and, earlier, demand above its forecast. Owner reports of rear screens shifting out of place, and retailer notes about a final quality adjustment, suggest a hardware fix. Sony hasn’t confirmed that.

**Q: Will the price change after the delay?**
There’s no sign of it. Sony still lists $4,899.99 for the body (ILME-FX5B) and $5,499.99 with the XLR handle (ILME-FX5). In Europe it’s €5,400 and €6,000.

**Q: Are the FX5 viewfinder and XLR handle delayed too?**
Yes. Sony Japan’s notice covers the DVF-EL1 viewfinder, the XLR-H2 handle and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode cable along with the camera.
